Solids to Add:
- Kibble (we use Iams) - whatever dry food you feed your dog should work. If it's smaller than the small hole of your size Kong, just lay a small dog treat in the bottom of your Kong before filling it up.
- Canned Dog Food - whatever flavor you use. Great to freeze!
- Natural Balance Dog Food- this comes in a roll and is more moist than kibble. It's very healthy and freezes well, so for Katy's food I use half of this for her daily food. She loves all the flavors. This food is also great for plugging up the small hole of your Kong before putting liquid inside to prevent messes in the freezer!
- Pedigree Dentastix
- I buy the Toy/Small Size because they fit perfectly inside the Medium Kongs. There are always coupons for Pedigree, so they're fairly economical.
- Small Rawhide sticks
- Beef Jerky
- Cooked Rice
- Potatoes -mashed or cubed
- Other veggies such as Celery, Spinach, Green Beans, Bell Peppers, Broccoli, Cucumber, Squash, Carrots and Asparagus. you can serve these whole if your dog like them, or try making them into a doggie smoothie with yogurt and some water.
- Watermelon chunks these do particularly well frozen
Liquids to Add:
- Water (I only recommend doing this if you are freezing the Kong!)
- Plain fat-free yogurt (you can also use low fat yogurt)
- Iams Dog Food Sauce
- Pureed Carrots with water
- Honey*
- Cheese Whiz
- Peanut butter
- Cream cheese
- Homemade/ store bought broth (make sure they do not hve no garlic or onions, low salt!!)
- Cottage cheese
- Canned Pumpkin
Other Additives:
- Mint leaves (helps keep your pet's breath smelling fresh)
- Olive, Flaxseed, or Sesame Oil
- Parsley
*These foods be added to your dogs food, but in limited quantities, don't give them more than a Tablespoon a day
The key to stuffing Kongs is putting foods your dog love with healthy fillers. Make sure that whatever you stuff their toys with that it's a safe food. If you're not sure if a food is safe for your dog, check this list or ask your vet.
Disclaimer: You should consult your vet before changing your dog's diet, especially if your dog has health problems. Make sure to monitor your dog with any toy, and inspect them frequently for damage.
